Coimbatore The third largest city of Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore or Kovai is one of the most industrialized cities in Tamil Nadu. It is known as the textile capital of South Indi or the Manchester of South. The city is situated on the banks of the River Noyyal. The rich black soil of the region has contributed to Coimbatore’s flourishing agricultural industry. The flourishing growth of cotton has served as a foundation for the establishment of Coimbator’s famous textile industry. The first textile mill camp up as far back as 1888 and there are now over a hundred mills. The city has many theatres and clubs, stadum complex, museums, parks and a zoo. A number if video game arcades, bowling alleys, billiards centres, discotheques, many country clubs etc. make entertainment lively here. Motor sports are a passion here and the city has many kart centers. There is a world class eighteen hole golf course in the city and many more in nearby hills stations. Kovai is the base for visiting the prime hill stations of South ooty, Kodaikanan and Munnar as well as the base for nearby renowned Marthamalai and Peru Temples, Palani, Guruvayur, Madurai, Trichy, Tanjore etc. Also the city is the base for more than dozen waterfalls, half a dozen wildlife sanctuaries and National parks, and a number of lakes and dam sites scattered in the splendid western hats. Coimbatore Tourist places and Other Attractions Perur Temple The temple is at its colorful best in March, when the Panguni Uthiram festival is celebrated. Siva< the presiding deity of this temple is known as Pattesswarar, and his consort Parvati is known as Pachai Nayaki. The temple has a number of huge statues. The temple was built by Karikala Cholan. Situated 7 km from Coimbatore, the temple is by the River Noyyal. Marudhamalai Temple This temple dedicated to Lord Muruga is set atop a hill. The presiding deity Dhandayuthapani is said to have performed a number of miracles to make his devotees happy. The temple is 12 km from Coimbatore Railway Station and Bus Stand. V.O.C Park This park, maintained by the Municipality, is dedicated to the memory of V.O.Chidambaram Pillai, one of the stalwarts in Tamilnadu who fought against British imperialism. Also part of the park is an aquarium, a mini-zoo and a toy train circuit. Agricultural University The state Agricultural University is situated about 5 km from Coimbatore Railway Station. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, one of the sixteen major Agricultural Universities in the country and one of the best of South Asia. Forest College Coimbatore, which is an educational center of importance, is also the home of the Forest College, one of the oldest institutions of its kind in India. Vaidehi Waterfalls It is located 30 km from Coimbatore via Narasipuram village. It is a fine picnic spot for trekkers. A perennial waterfall is a major attraction here. Kodumudi It is 40 km from Erode and 104 km from Coimbatore. A special feature is this place is that shrines for Siva, Vishnu and Brahma are located in one temple complex. Siva is known as Muchukundeswarart and Vishnu as Veera Narayana Perumal. This is one of the important temples in Erode district. Sengupathi Water falls This falls is situated 35 km from Coimbatore on the Coimbatore Siruvani Main Road. Monkey Falls It is 65 km from Coimbatore and 27 km from Pollachi on Coimbatore Polachi Valprai Highways. Pollachi This town is about 40 km from Coimbatore on the way to Parabikulam Aliyar Project. Next to Coimbatore, it is the leading town of the district and an important commercial center. A temple dedicated to Mariamman and another to Subramanyua are located here. There are beautiful stone carvings of a five hooded serpent, a yali with a chain hanging from its mouth and zodiac signs in the Subramanya temple. Avinashi The Avinashi Lingeswar temple located here is about 40 km from Coimbatore. Avinashi is also known as Southern Banaras. Dating back to the 12th century AD this is the biggest temple in Coimbatore district built by the Cholas. There are some fine stone carvings in this temple. This place was earlier called Pikkoigul. Eco Tourism Centers Monkey falls at Aliyar, Crocodile breeding center at Amaravathi, Gran Hills, Attakatti, Nirar, Kullipatti, Manompally, Chinnar, Thirumoorthy, Varagaliyar and Majampathy. Trekking sheds are available at Majampathy and Varagaliyar. While a wild life interpretation center is at Aliyar, a medicinal plant interpretation is at Topslip. How to reach Coimbatore Air Coimbatore airport is located on the outskirts of the city and is well connected to all major cities in India as well as the Gulf. Road Three of the four bus stations are at Gandhipuram. The express bus stand is just off the Dr. Nanjappa Road. The City Bus stand is just opposite. The Gandhipuram Bus Stand (east of the City Bus Stand) has services to Ooty every 20 minutes. The Ukkadam Moffusil Bus Station has services to Pollachi, Palani and border towns, Palakkad (48 km) in Kerala. Ukkadam is 1½ km from Gandhipuram (Palakkad). Rail Kovai is an important rail junction in the South linked to all the main cities in the country.
